This should be filmed and remain as a document of the DotCom period.
This week end I am going to be in London at Amanda and Al's new house. Also will be meeting with Moti from e-marketing, haven't seen him for a while now. I will try to post from London using the Instant Messenger, maybe the Jscript one :-)
The discussion about decentralization on Yahoo groups is becoming more and more technical and is loosing sight of the real needs of the people that might use the technology being discussed. Nevertheless the discussion is good food for thought....

Finally on Saturday evening we have set-up the new personalization page. Now it's up and running.
It's nice to be able to post by IM. it is more convenient and different. A normal post takes a little effort: type the url, login, get to the posting page and write it. With this feature I start posting right away! That's great.

What sounds like a buzz word of the past is slowly gaining ground.
Weblogs grow at an amazing rate - Slashdot just announced the introduction of ads (!) on its user generated site because success has a price, if only that of maintaining and financing a smooth operation. When BBC online invited people on September 11th to share their eyewitness accounts, the power of dozens of unexpected perspectives clearly added to the already excellent job done by the staff.
When Yossi Vardi speaks about user-generated content he has the experience of someone who provided users with a tool that was downloaded 93 Million times - ICQ. Instant messaging probably surpasses email usage among teenagers in the US and satisfies the same basic need as SMS does in Europe.
"A strategic comparison of Windows vs. Unix. The real question is not 'which is cheaper' but 'which is smarter?' Summary: Most of the Windows versus Unix debate has been cast in terms of which is technically better or which is cheaper, but the real question is, 'Under what circumstances is it smarter to pick one technology rather than the other?' "
This is my second post with the IM.
Apple's 'Breakthrough' iPod - After a week of fevered speculation, Apple has finally unveiled its secret 'breakthrough' device: The iPod is a pricey portable music player that stores up to 1,000 songs and can copy a CD in 10 seconds. By Brad King and Farhad Manjoo. I thought that too.

Well that's a tough one! To desktop or not to desktop! And may be also wrong. The real one should be: to PocketPC or to Palm... that's where the market is going to move... and that's where MS opened up their platform..... Should Linux Throw in the Towel? - Should the Linux community surrender it's war against Microsoft in the desktop OS market and focus it's attention on becoming the dominate server operating system for enterprise computing? Flying these days does not make you feel very comfortable. Just landed at Linate. I must admit I feel relieved. On with more work. Time for Tipic to release some cool stuff. The development team is doing a great job. We'll see some new stuff....

Important Feingold Civil Liberties Amendments to Bush Anti-Terrorism Bill - Sen. Russ Feingold, ( D - WI ) today blocked Bush's anti-terrorism bill which was being fast-tracked through congress with the help of Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, (D-S.D). The fast-track process would have prevented debate or amendments to the `Uniting and Strengthening America Act' or the `USA Act of 2001', a bill which would place considerable new restrictions on our civil liberties. The Center for Democracy and Technology urges Support of the Feingold Amendments to the USA Act. For more information on the problems Sen. Feingold proposes to address, please read the CDT or ACLU legislation analysis. This is a vary important issue so please contact your representatives and encourage them to support the Feingold Amendments.NOTE: The full text of the amendments will be available at 10:00am Thursday, October 11. I will post it soon thereafter [Kuro5hin]

The Profit Protection Plan from Purgatory - We are entering an age where it is easier than it has ever been to produce professional quality audio and video, and get the word out about it. Rather than taking advantage of this to their own and consumers benefit, the music industry and movie industry have chosen to maintain their old, inefficient system by any means possible. This has meant that instead of attempting to improve not only the quality of goods offered, but the way in which they are distributed, the "content industry" is trying to protect their profits through an agenda consisting of legislation and tort. Just got back from Berlin this morning. Had an interesting conversation with Erik Moeller who runs Infoanarchy.org, and got some feedback about TipicIM Licensing Agreement (we'll change that one). Then on the way back to Milan this morning the plane wouldn't land; the pilot was telling us it was because it was foggy in Linate and the airport was closed. Once we landed at Malpensa, we found out about the accident in Linate ... more the 100 dead... It just seems that this period will not go away....

Economics of Software vs. Service Businesses - Larry Augustin just weighed in on the "I've got more programmers than you" thread on the free software business mailing list with a nice analysis of the difference between software service and sale/licensing businesses by comparing the gross and net margins, and the R&D and marketing expense percentages, of EDS and Microsoft. Worth a read. [Meerkat: An Open Wire Service]
Cyberspace a Separate Place? - n/a [Slashdot] Yes, it is hard to tell. If you judge from people who actually work in this field, I would say that it IS a separate place.
Finnish city plans switch from Windows to Linux - Cites cost of new licensing regime... [The Register] Could this be a trend? GNU economy?? Energis exits local loop debacle - Blames BT [The Register]
Lineo's GPL Compliance Tool - Some developers shy away from using any open source software in their projects because they worry about having to release all their code if they come under the GPL (GNU General Public License). Now, Lineo offers a tool to those working with its embedded toolset to help them figure out if they're in conflict with the GPL. [Meerkat: An Open Wire Service]
Advocating the separation of the application from the user interface - I think that the same thing that has happened to html-xml needs to happen to operating systems. The user end needs to be separated as much as possible from the software. This would streamline the development of new products, free developers from having to think about presentation at all, and allow a much greater flexibility in the user interface. [Kuro5hin]
